Why Art?
I deeply admire artists - who embody self-expression and creativity, and artisans - who exemplify craftsmanship and skill. I have tremendous respect for those who dedicate themselves to their craft, whatever form it takes.
As a business professional, art has never been a requirement in my job descriptions. But yet I have found it to be an integral part of my career achievements. In my own life, I strive to approach everything I do with a sense of artfulness - whether that’s in my hobbies, professional pursuits, or roles as a husband and parent. Embracing the perspectives of both artist and artisan has brought sustained, higher levels of performance in my professional life and more joy in my personal life.
I have explored a variety of arts, and the pursuits have taught me unexpected lessons that I might not have learned otherwise. Part of the reason for making this website is to reflect on some lessons of perspective, emotional intelligence, and creativity.
Regardless of what you do professionally (I do this), exploring the arts can have a powerful impact on your success. Pursuing artistry can be humbling and challenging in the best possible way. Highly successful people need a place where they are beginners again. Senior leaders with status can benefit tremendously from visiting places where their status doesn’t mean anything.
Deep engagement in artistic disciplines can cultivate both humility and empowerment simultaneously. The lessons along the way promises to bring depth to our human intelligence.
And that, in our ever changing world, is more important than ever.
